Summer Travel with Sleep Apnea — Using an Oral Appliance Comfortably

Dr. Marlene Shaw May 14, 2026 7 min read

Trips should feel restorative. A portable oral appliance can replace your CPAP on the road without sacrificing therapy.

Vacation should leave you more rested, not less. For patients who travel often, lugging a CPAP — with its hose, mask, humidifier, distilled water and outlet adapter — is one of the most common reasons therapy quietly lapses on the road. Skipping even a few nights of treatment is enough to bring back fatigue, headaches and the daytime fog you came on vacation to escape.

Why an oral appliance travels well

  • Fits in a small protective case the size of a glasses case
  • No power, hose, humidifier or distilled water required
  • Silent — no compressor noise to disturb a partner or a roommate
  • Goes through airport security without explanation or special declarations
  • Works the same at sea level, in the mountains, and on a long-haul flight
  • No outlet adapter or voltage converter needed when traveling internationally

Is an oral appliance as effective as CPAP?

For mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea, custom oral appliances are considered first-line therapy by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. For severe OSA, CPAP remains the gold standard at home — but a custom oral appliance is often the difference between maintaining therapy on the road and skipping it entirely. Many of our DC patients keep their CPAP at home and use an oral appliance specifically for travel; partial therapy is still dramatically better than none.

A simple pre-trip checklist

  • Pack the appliance in your carry-on — never check it; lost luggage means lost therapy
  • Bring the case, cleaning tablets and a soft toothbrush we provided at your fitting
  • Carry a copy of your prescription or letter from our office for international trips
  • Avoid alcohol close to bedtime — it relaxes airway muscles and undoes the device's benefit
  • If your appliance feels different after a long flight, give your bite 10–15 minutes to settle in the morning

Daily care on the road

Rinse the device in cool water after every wear (hot water can warp the acrylic), brush it gently with a soft toothbrush, and let it air-dry in its vented case. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill. Once a week, soak it in the cleaning tablets we provide at your fitting.

When you get home

If your trip is longer than a few weeks, plan a brief titration check with us so we can confirm the device is still tracking with your airway. Small bite changes can compound on long trips, and a 10-minute adjustment is usually all that's needed to keep your nights consistent.
